Canary Islands: a group of 7 vulcanic islands.
It consists of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and El Hierro. Some people are convinced that the group counts 8 islands, because of the small island Graciosa belonging to Lanzarote. Beloved by sailors, who like to anchor in a not crowdy place.

Gran Canaria offers something for everyone its taste. Most known is the coastal town Playa del Inglés with a lot of bars, disco's, a sunny beach bordering on the dunes.

More unknown and in fact much prettier are the small Villages inland. There the Canarian characteristics with its old traditions and folklore are still have been preserved.
Traditional parties up in the mountain villages to honour the blossom of the almond trees (Fiesta de Almendras - February) in for example Tejeda. There are 14 national holiday-days a year on this island.
Here you will also find the small farms, making the famous Canarian cheeses (out of 3 kinds of milk -sheep, cow and goat milk-).

Up in the north and the center of the island there are cave houses to visit, often still used as stable or even house.

The area around the Roque Nublo (highest point on Gran Canaria: Pico de las Nievas 1949m) is acclaimed one of the biggest natural parks in entire Spain with a surface of 260m2. Beautiful walking routes are crossing this area, where you still can see the vulkcanic origin. The biggest crater has a cross-section of 15 kilometers!

"The island of alternation", "the island of the eternal spring", "the island of blessed ones", are only a part of the names for this island. From 3000 meters Tenerife arises from the depht of the sea with the vulcano "Teide" as the highest point. It is also the highest peak of entire Spain, with its 3718 meters. Tenerife has a surface of 2057m2 and herewith it is the biggest island in this archipelago. The name comes from the language of the first habitants and stands for silver, mountain and snow. Of course this name is caused by the Teide. The Teide is the middle point and during the wintermonths the top is covered in snow.

The touristic places for the mass are Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas, beloved for the beaches. Sky high buildings and a lot of bars and discos to have fun. But, if you go a little bit further, then you will discover a totally different island with fantastic nature and desplate areas, where you can imaging yourself being alone in this world, far away from the lazy sun lovers.

Small costal towns, where the Canary characters are surviving. Rough mountain peaks in between the Anaga mountains in the east and the Teno Mountains in the west. In the south the poor landscape, where wolfs-milk and cactuses are dominating the vegetation. De deep black hiking routes lead you through this vulcanic area and the colours are in full contrast with the paths through the (pine tree) woods. National park "Cañadas del Teide" with the enormous Caldera are without doubt attraction number one!

With a surface of 373 km2 La Gomera is one of the smallest islands and is situated in the middle of the western islands. The highest point here is the Garajonay (1487m) and is also the center of the natural park - which is 10% of the whole island -! Next to it La Gomera has even 16 protected parks more. More than 100.000 palm trees are growing till the 1300 meter border. A paradise with stretched woods and mountain tops in the mist. The highest dragon tree on the island you will find in Alojera (in the north-west). La Gomera has 15.000 citizens, who are caring to keep up the old traditions. You can still hear the whistle "El Silbo" in the mountains in accordance with an old habit.

San Sebastian is the administrative and political heart of La Gomera and has 6.000 citizens. A modern harbour town and mooring place for the ferry boats. The port to the city and the island. It is a place of transfers from people and boats. Historical buildings, small squares and cosy streets are characterizing the street scene of San Sebastian. It has a rich history; So was Colombus font of this harbour and it was his last homebase before he headed for the new continent Amerika (and left next to this a love and a broken heart behind). A place, which is a visit worthy for sure!

La Palma is Isla Bonita of the archipelago. Most north westerly situated island and it belongs to the region of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. With 80.000 citizens and a surface of 706 km2 this island is the greenest one of all and has the richdom of 20 protected natural areas (35% of the entire surface).

For living the biggest part is earned in the banana industry and tourism is only up coming from the last years. Next to bananas you find old local handicrafts, like handmade cigars, handmade baskets, embroidery,...

In the most southern point of La Palma you will find the vineyards on the very rich vulcanic ground around the Fuencaliente, where the most recent eruption of the Teneguía took place in 1971.In local bars and bodegas you can enjoy, next to the well known spanish wines, the local wines (fruity body and less colour).

The citizens of this island are known for their hospitality and kindness, what is according with our own experience here. Nature is overwhelming. Small twinkling creeks and unique mountain tops, such as the Roque de los Muchachos. Protected plants and tretched pine woods are characterizing the landscape of La Palma. In the western part you can find some pretty examples of the dragon trees and you will find palm tree concentrations as well.

El Hierro is the smallest island and the perl of the group as well. The tourism level here is very low and only small amounts of tourists are visiting this island (also caused by bad travel connections). El Hierro lies most westerly and has a surface of only 278 km2. The landscape in the south of the island is amazing and impressive black vulcanic.

El Hierro is known for the Sabinas (genebra bushes), which are having the most outlandish scapes and also for teh huge giant lizard (Lagartos Gigantes), which is a protected animal. The Sabinas are to discover in the famous wood of genebra bushes: "El Sabinar" (west).

The highest point lays at 1500 meters. 60% of El Hierro was declared as protected area. A tour over the island by foot or car will lead you through isolated and inhospitable areas, where you can get the feeling that you are all alone out there on this mysterious island. High in the mountains, often wrapped in mist, you are feeling like an actor in a mysterious movy, without escape.

El Hierro is known for its large collection of cave paintings in El Julán (south): Los Letreros de Julán. Also Very known because of its Mirador de la Peña (panoramic point in the northern part of El Hierro). A visit worthy to enjoy this fantastic view over the coastline and Atlantic Ocean. You can also have lunch or dinner here in a typical Canary (and monumental) lava house, which exists on one side out of a glass wall, so that you can enjoy the view as well during your meal.

In small places, like La Restinga, the peaceful and quiet life rythm of the citizens are creating a relaxed atmosphere here. Especially a suitable island to escape all daily stress and business and not to forget to escape mass tourism.
